Individual Psychotherapy in NYC
For over 50 years, Fifth Avenue Therapy has helped New Yorkers work through anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, grief, and the ordinary and extraordinary pressures of life in the city. Individual psychotherapy is the heart of what we do: weekly, one-on-one sessions with a clinician who gets to know you, your history, and what you want to change.
We are a not-for-profit psychotherapy practice near Union Square, situated at the gateway between Midtown and Downtown Manhattan. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicaid, and offer sliding-scale fees based on income. Affordable, high-quality care shouldn't depend on what you can afford.
What Individual Therapy Looks Like at Fifth Avenue
Therapy at Fifth Avenue is collaborative. In the first few sessions, you and your therapist get to know one another and begin to set attainable goals: what's bringing you in, what you'd like to feel differently, and how you'll know you're making progress.
Our overall approach is “relational”: we use the relationship that develops between therapist and client as a starting point for understanding how your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors shape the other relationships in your life. From there, your clinician draws on the methods best suited to you: psychodynamic (feelings-based) work, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and other evidence-based approaches tailored to your goals rather than a one-size-fits-all program.
What We Help With
Clients come to us for support with a wide range of concerns, including:
Anxiety, stress, and burnout
Depression and low mood
Relationship and family difficulties
Grief and loss
Life transitions, career pressure, and identity questions
Self-esteem and personal growth
Whether you're navigating a specific crisis or seeking longer-term self-understanding, you'll be matched with a clinician suited to what you're working through.
In-Person and Online Sessions
We offer both in-person sessions at our office near Union Square and secure online therapy for clients across New York State. Many clients value the flexibility of early-morning or evening appointments that fit around a demanding work schedule.
Affordable, In-Network Care
We are one of the few group practices in NYC that accepts Medicaid, alongside most major insurance plans. For clients without coverage, or whose plans we don't accept, we offer a sliding-scale fee based on income. Our intake team can walk you through your options before you begin.
